Crawford Square

Although all of the squares used to be fenced in, Crawford Square is the only one that still is...and for good reason. It's now a basketball court and the fence is to keep the balls from bouncing into the streets. During Jim Crow, this square was the only one where African-Americans were allowed to congregate and it is still a local meeting place and gossip mill for The Historic District's black community.

Crawford Square

Its centerpiece is a pleasant, white gazebo and dripping Spanish Moss canopies the entire square.

To proceed with the tour, go south on Houston Street until you get to East Liberty Street where you will take a right turn. Go west to Habersham Street. Take a left there, crossing over Liberty. Continue southerly down Habersham until you get to Troup Square.
