Getting Around Savannah

Although Savannah is the country's largest national historic landmark district it is not too big to discover by foot. Savannah first and foremost is a walking town. Most shops, B&B's and Hotels in the area offer free walking maps so be sure to ask for one first thing.

The Express Shuttle runs 7 days a week from 11am to 9pm with 11 stops in the historic district.

To further invoke the sense of history, River Street can be explored by streetcar. The River Street Streetcar runs Thursday to Sunday from noon until 9pm with six stops between Montgomery Street and The Waving Girl Landing.

Want to snap a great picture of the river front? Use Savannah Belles Ferry and cross the river in a ferry reminiscent of those used 100 years ago to Savannah's International Trade & Convention Center. The ferry runs every day from 7am to midnight and has two landing sites on the historic side, by the Waving Girl Landing and just below City Hall.

One of my favorite options for getting around Savannah are the Vespa Scooter Rentals available at 236 Drayton Street. Available for 1 hour to 7 day rentals this is a fun and oh so European way to explore Savannah.

The Savannah Pedicab is a fun way to get around downtown. They offer both hourly rate tours and a traditional taxi service... I recommend them for getting back to your bed after a night of bar hoping!

Along with being a great walking town, Savannah welcomes bike riders. From the Downtown area to Tybee Island you can find a good variety of Bike Rental shops. Check around for rates, but the average is $20 a day. There are lots of bike racks available for when you are out exploring, but be sure to use a lock!! And most of the CAT buses offer bike racks as well.

As with all cities, Savannah has lots of Taxi and Cab services. Rates are pretty reasonable. You'll have more luck calling a service for pick up than hailing one down.

If you are planning a few days trips around the area I would recommend renting a car. Getting around Savannah is pretty easy without one, but if you'd like to visit Hilton Head or Bluffton in South Carolina or explore Darien or into Georgia's Barrier Islands you'll find it easier to do if you have a car. The airport offers lots of great options, but if you decide you want something just for a day or two you'll find a lots of locations downtown Savannah that will be happy to pick you up.

HORSE AND CARRIAGE

Savannah offers lots of carriage rides but these are strictly tours and not so much a way of getting from point A to point B. They are however a relaxing way to see the sites, hear the history and explore a romantic Savannah!
