Madison Square
Madison Square, named for our fourth president, James Madison, hosted two Civil War generals during that conflict...Robert E. Lee and William T. Sherman. What a difference two years make. In 1862, while Lee was leading the Confederate Coast Defenses, he was a guest in the Sorrel-Weed House on the north side of the square. By Christmas Eve 1864, that yankee Sherman had set up his headquarters right across the street, catercorner, at the Green-Meldrin House and had offered up the city to President Lincoln as a Christmas present.

One of our favorite bookstores ever, E. Shaver Booksellers, is on the northeast corner and you really should visit there. They feature lots of local stuff including Savannah history and regional Low Country fiction. The staff is really knowledgeable and friendly and the atmosphere is quaint without trying to be. It really is a world class shop.

'Shop SCAD' is just around the corner and housed in the old Savannah Guards Armory. If you're in the market for an interesting piece of artwork created by an up and coming genius attending the Savannah College of Art and Design, you'll want to peruse their stuff. The Gryphon tea room is across the street in the beautiful, old art deco Scottish Rite Temple and the DeSoto Hilton is nearby if you want luxury with an affordable price. They run specials all the time.
