Monterey Square
Monterey Square is the "Midnight In The Garden Of Good And Evil' square. And, as its main character, Jim Williams, said in the book, "The loveliest of all..."
This is Jefferson's favorite. He used it as the backdrop of his "The Last Song" video.
On the southwest corner stands the stately and Italianate, Mercer-Williams House, setting for the famous best seller and currently a museum that's open daily to visitors.
Aside from its macabre notoriety it really is one of the most beautiful and interesting looking houses in Savannah. Built by Johnny Mercer's grandfather at the beginning of the Civil War, it has a strange allure that one cannot help but stare at...for a long time.
Across the square is the synagogue, Congregation Mickve Israel, oldest congregation in America practicing Reform Judaism. And, on the north face is the Comer House which, in 1886, hosted former Confederate President, Jefferson Davis and, his daughter, Winnie. Wonder what they thought about that at the temple?
In its center stands the monument to Baron Casimir Pulaski who died helping to defend Savannah during the American Revolution. It may be his grave or it may not be. The current historical stance is, "If these aren't his bones we'll just call this a Tomb For The Unknown Soldier."
