Orleans Square
Orleans Square, featuring the stately, glowering Harper Fowlkes House, was described by Harry Hervey in his scandalous 1939 tell-all novel, "The Damned Don't Cry", as 'an arid, little square, in a city where most of its squares are exuberantly green'.
It is certainly not arid anymore. Old oaks, low limbed and dripping with Spanish Moss, lush ground foliage and a gorgeous fountain, made and unveiled in 1989 to commemorate Savannah's German immigrants, make this square a true, hidden gem in The Historic District.
It's on Barnard Street between Hull and Perry. The Savannah Civic Center can be seen to the west.
