In Savannah
Bed and Breakfast
Is The Way To Go

A Savannah Bed and Breakfast is the answer for anyone who has ever passed by an old Victorian or Antebellum home and wondered what it might be like to stay there?

Savannah is loaded with elegant and, in most cases, affordable Bed and Breakfasts. If you really want to absorb the full vibe of Historic Savannah then take the B&B route when booking your accommodations.

We've stayed in a number of them and they are such a treat. In Savannah you get so much more than just a bed and a breakfast. Often there will be wine and cheese late afternoon and a little one on one time with some of the best tour guides in the city.

Dresser Palmer Bed and Breakfast

A word of caution when traveling with children... call ahead to make sure your bed and breakfast choice allows children. No worries if you're traveling with children, a great alternative is to check out Savannah's Vacation Rentals.

It's difficult to pick a favorite Savannah Bed and Breakfast so we've listed a few that have been the setting of some of our most memorable stays.

THE DRESSER PALMER HOUSE
211 East Gaston Street
(912) 238-3294

The Dresser Palmer House is 11,000 square feet of Italianate, cozy goodness!

We would live here if we could. Who wouldn't?

With full, gourmet southern breakfasts (not just corn flakes and bagels), fireplaces in most rooms and a 24 hour concierge service, this B&B is friendly, accessible luxury all the way.

Each room is different and beautifully appointed with quintessential Savannah names such as The Johnny Mercer Room, The Flannery O'Connor Room, The Emma Kelly Room and so on.

There really is a warm and inviting feeling in the house and we love it.

Tami and I stayed there several times when it was under different management and was called The Gaston Gallery. We had fine, old times sitting on the back veranda drinking wine (before Peyton was born) and then tromping on down the "lane", as alleys are called in The Hostess City, to Johnnie Ganem's wine store for more libational reinforcement.

One night the concierge got into the fun with us and sat there merrily spouting gossip about everyone he knew, which was about half of Savannah!

The house is located on Gaston Street about one block from Forsyth Park and walking distance from most restaurants, bars and attractions in The Historic District. It's a 1/2 block to the liquor store.

THE FORSYTH PARK INN
102 West Hall Street
(912) 233-6800

Do you like your Bed and Breakfast friendly? How about comfortable? Haunted?

Forsyth Park Inn is one of our favorite finds. Tami and I stayed at this 1893 Queen Anne mansion back in 2002 and then, months later while watching The Travel Channel, saw a segment all about the grisly murder and macabre haunting in the house.

I can't remember the details...something about one sister killing another for some reason, maybe. In a city this haunted, it's hard to keep up with all the ghastly, ghostly tales of intrigue. At any rate, guests see stuff from time to time and things go bump in the night.

Located right across the street from Forsyth Park, in The Victorian District, you couldn't ask for a prettier view from the front porch. The park, the neighboring mansions, the Spanish Moss and flora are all exuberantly beautiful and there's even a playground nearby for children.

It's Peyton's favorite in the city.

ELIZA THOMPSON HOUSE

One of the more popular of the Savannah bed and breakfasts is the Eliza Thompson House located on Jones Street near Bull Street. It's only a few doors down from Mrs. Wilkes' Boarding House so you know you won't go hungry!

Eliza Thompson B&B in Savannah

Built in 1847, this old mansion has had its share of ghost sightings, including Confederate soldiers and a girl, dressed in white, who appears in the hallway.

Jones Street, in my opinion, is the prettiest residential street in old Savannah. It is paved with old brick and ancient oaks with Spanish Moss hang an otherworldly canopy over it. And, Bull Street is the main thoroughfare for The Historic District so the Eliza Thompson House is right in the thick of it all.

The Crystal Beer Parlor and the Six Pence Pub are also just a few minutes' walk away. So is Mercer-Williams House and Forsyth Park.

THE GASTONIAN

Of all the Savannah bed and breakfasts, The Gastonian is still the most venerable and elite. Located on Gaston Street, near Forsyth Park, this old b & b is actually two adjoining Regency-Italianate style mansions and was recognized by Conde Nast Traveler Magazine as one of the finest places to stay in the world. The Gastonian B&B in Savannah This could possibly be Savannah's most romantic inn. All 17 guest rooms have their own fireplaces and visitors are given personalized breakfast menus and can choose a silver tray service or may join other guests downstairs for family style breakfasts.

Hors d-oeuvres, wine and tea are served in the afternoons and desserts and cordials are served in the evenings.

The neighborhood is stunning as well. The Gastonian is located right on the border between The Historic District and The Victorian District so, if you love old mansions, bring your camera.
