Savannah Churches
Savannah Churches are beautiful. Church plays a hugely important role in most southern homes and, in Savannah's Historic District, some of our grandest houses of all are houses of worship. From "The Mother Church Of Georgia", Christ Church, on
Johnson Square
to The Cathedral Of Saint John The Baptist on
LaFayette Square...

to Congregation Mickve Israel on
Monterey Square,

Savannah's monuments to The Almighty tower over her monuments to human history. They even dwarf the mighty live oak trees.Forrest Gump's famous feather descended from above the steeple of the Independent Presbyterian Church on Bull Street...

...down to his sneaker shod feet as Forrest sat on a bench that was temporarily situated on the north side of Chippewa Square. That pinnacle can be seen from as far as the South Carolina side of the Talmadge Bridge. You cannot turn a corner downtown without being awed by one of these truly awesome buildings but they are not museums. They are living, breathing centers of community and fellowship and are symbols of the timeless grace for which Savannah is famous.
