Savannah Squares

Ahhh Savannah Squares...

What makes a city unique?

Paris has the Eiffel Tower.
New York has Central Park.
Savannah has its squares.

The current grid of 22 lush, green Savannah squares in The Historic District sets our city apart from other beautiful, old southern towns by giving every other block and each neighborhood its own living room, its own personality.

Although most are framed and canopied by the omnipresent Spanish Moss and centered by some sort of statue or fountain, they are all completely different from each other.

22 different histories.

22 different vibes.

From Bay Street down to Gaston and from MLK over to East Broad, spanning the entire area of the old town, these lovely civic gardens, with names like Chippewa, Oglethorpe, Monterey and Orleans, are literally living monuments to both the early settlers and modern day citizens of this hypnotic place.

You will be enchanted and we'll bet the farm on that.

A Walking Tour of the Bull Street Squares

We'll start where Savannah's history begins, at Johnson Square. Heading in the opposite direction of the Savannah River we will walk through Wright Square, Chippewa Square, Madison Square, and Monterey Square before ending at Forsyth Park.

A Walking Tour The Western Squares

This tour starts at Franklin Square and will take you through City Market to Savannah's reclaimed Ellis Square. From there we will walk through Telfair, Orleans, Pulaski and Chatham Squares towards Forsyth Park.

Please note we have not included Elbert or Liberty Squares in this online tour.

A Walking Tour The Eastern Squares

A tour of the eastern squares makes for a fun, afternoon stroll.

The architecture is diverse and moods swing from quaint to grand from square to square.

Our suggestion is to have lunch at The Pirates House on East Broad Street then cross over to Bryan Street and walk westward until you get to Washington Square on your left.
