Savannah Gardens
Savannah gardens! Savannah flowers!
There's nothing like the Southland in the springtime. And, spring bursts alive around the middle of March, just in time for St. Patrick's Day.
From Victory Drive and all the through our squares, the azaleas, some pink, some white, some magenta, pop lavishly against the deep green foliage. The dogwoods are absolutely radiant with their creamy blooms and emerald leaves.
Around the third week of April, The Garden Club Of Savannah, (912) 961-4805, conducts a "Secret Garden Tour". The stops change each year but usually two public gardens, such as The Harper-Fowlkes House and Massey School, will be shown. They serve a lovely tea at Harper-Fowlkes and provide a 15 minute tour of the home as well. Massey is the oldest chartered school in Georgia.
And, we cannot forget the finest public gardens of all, our squares! Each one is unique and different. Monterey seems to bloom the earliest because of the way the sun hits it but others like Chippewa hold out for a few days so their flowers will still be in bloom on though April.
Other gardens to check out are the Owens-Thomas House, Davenport House and the Juliette Gordon Low House. There is also a small, gated rose garden in Forsyth Park.
