SCAD Savannah College of Art & Design
The Savannah College Of Art And Design, known simply as SCAD, is the most comprehensive school of art in the United States.
They offer more degree programs (43 majors and more than 50 minors) than any other arts and design university anywhere.
Founded in 1978, and with other campi in Atlanta, Hong Kong and LaCoste, France, the school offers students courses such as photography, fashion design, historic preservation, film making, architectural studies and much more.
Studies at SCAD include a variety of networking opportunities and a belief that exposure to different art mediums are key to exploring your creativity.
This private and non-profit institution opened its first classroom in spring of 1979 at the old Savannah Volunteer Guard Armory on Bull Street and now is housed in more than 2 million square feet of real estate through out Savannah.
The Volunteer Guard Armory is still in use today. It houses ShopSCAD where students and alumni market their own art pieces.
In the shop you can purchase fine art, jewelry, books, decor, stationary and baby gifts. The pieces are always changing and it's a great place to support up and coming artists.
It's one of our favorite places to take first time visitors to Savannah.
The college really adds to the buzz and vibe of downtown Savannah. The students bring a hip, bohemian air with them and the school has played a major role in the restoration of our Historic District. Countless buildings have been saved and spruced up because of their efforts. We are always seeing students making films in the squares, sketching the old mansions and holding court in the coffee houses.
From September to June, it feels like the most romantic college campus in the world.
